I would love to add example screenshots, but all file types are not supported, GIF, PNG, JPEG, BMP - it makes it hard to add relevant screenshots.
Seems like the craiglist links do not always work. For example the autotempest craigslist link will populate the make and model filter in craigslist. This is a problem because a lot of posters do not list the make, so few results are returned. You can replicate this by searching "excursion" vs. "ford excursion" in the make and model filter. Consider dropping the make when auto-populating CL filters1 vote
Hmm, that’s interesting. I assume most people would put the make in the ad somewhere at least. Maybe we should put the make in as a regular keyword instead. We’ll look into it.
In the meantime, you can actually edit the keywords we use for make/model/general in the options section at the top of the autotempest craigslist section. It will remember your changes when you repeat the same search.
Why in the world would you allow listing of cars without the actual millage, millage is such an important critria, I would not waste my time to contact the seller, if millage not posted, and I would peter to use other websites where they mandate the millage such as Facebook Marketplace, Craig's list or Auto Trader than a site allows this.1 vote
We do collect vehicle mileage from all our sources, and I believe it’s displayed for the vast majority of vehicles. We’re a search engine that searches listings on many different sites, so we don’t directly control what information sellers provide. Could you provide some examples of vehicles that don’t have mileage listed so we can look into them?
Please add a Right Hand Drive (RHD) search option. RHD cars in the USA are cheap, great for export, but finding them takes an age!

Have you tried using the keywords field to search? I would think searching for either “right hand drive” or RHD would find them all. You can do that like this:
“right hand drive” | RHD
Allow the user to exclude specific makes and models from the search (for example, I am looking for an AWD hatchback newer than 2012, but I do not want a Subaru. The results are flooded with subarus.)1 vote
This is something we’re considering. In the meantime, you could achieve something close using negative keywords. If you enter this in the keywords field, it will filter out any post containing the word Subaru:
Volvo V70 is listed but I'm searching for the V70R model specfically, which was a limited production all wheel drive sports car.1 vote
So, technically I think the model name is “V70 R” with a space? R is the trim level, and V70 the main model. However, it does appear some sellers do list it without the space too. Some also do weird things like write it as V70 2.5T R and such.
I’d suggest choosing V70 as the model, and explicitly searching both possibilities by entering this in the trim field:
R | V70R
We’ll look into whether we can improve the situation for these kinds of ambiguous trim/models on our end too.
You are missing BMW 540d from the dropdown list of car models.1 vote
It would be nice when searching lots of cars in multiple searches to ignore certain cars, and to be able to review a car, and then save it for future consideration (maybe with a 7 day limit to keep the list fresh). This would be better than grabbing URLs and stuffing in Keep.1 vote
This is definitely something that’s on our radar; we have some other priorities that are higher, since bookmarks or something like Keep does work for this, but we agree that a feature like you describe here would be helpful!
You need to be able to search by multiple brands and models at the same time. That’s the main thing I like about cars.com
There are times when I don’t have an exact preference of brand or model or even couple or sedan but I’m looking under a price range and maybe a transmission type but your site can’t do that. I have to do multiple individual searches and that’s cumbersome and time consuming so I don’t use your site really. I would if you could do that.6 votes
You can search all brands at the same time, with a limit to the price, transmission type, and/or bodystyle(s). Do you mean do all that while restricting to multiple, but not all, brands?
I'd like to see the single Truck category be split into small and full size (or large). (Canyon, Tacoma, Ranger, etc)
right now i'm having to type in the model of every small truck and an option for that would be much nicer to have.1 vote
I see what you mean. Unfortunately since we don’t get that data from our sources, I think the only way we could do it would be something similar to what you’re doing—we’d need to keep a list of all the small vs large truck models. Might look into it at some point if this idea is popular.
If i search for vehicles under $10,000 all it shows is from bring a trailer and none of them are under that price. Need to clean things up alot, thats very frustrating.1 vote
Since all Bring a Trailer listings are auctions, they don’t have fixed prices. And we don’t get an updated feed of the current bids, so can’t filter out those that are above your price without filtering them all out. For now we’ve decided to err on the side of showing them.
That said, if you want to you can turn off the whole Bring a trailer source in the choose sources menu at the top of the results page.
Regarding why you’re not getting other results, please reply to this notification email and let us know what you’re searching for exactly and where, so we can check it out.
We’re going to either get these added, or possibly simplify the Lexus list down to just the main models (IS, LS, etc.), and you can then use the trim field to search the specific one you’re interested in. (In fact, that works already. You can choose Lexus and LS (all), then enter 500 or 500h as the trim.)
The ability to search craigslist regions instead of a "circle" around my area.
So if I want to exclude let's say cars from Salt Lake City vs. Phoenix.
If I live in vegas and search within a certain circle I get both, but I don't ever want cars from Utah or Idaho for that matter. So if I could just have a clickable map to always search that would be nice.1 vote
We’re actually planning to add a filter very soon that will let you restrict results to only within your state, so hopefully that will help. A fully customized selector, potentially with a map, would be much more involved, and may not be worth the time or interface complexity compared to other things we could do—but we will consider it. Will leave this under review for now.
This site seriously needs more in depth truck options. There isnt a 2x4 or 4x4 option, no regular cab, extended cab, crew cab option or long bed, short bed, motor options. Having these options would help narrow down searches and save customers time....just helpful info from a dealer that deals with this on the daily2 votes
Agreed. We will be adding the drive type (2wd, 4×4 etc.) soon. The others are a bit trickier as our sources don’t currently provide that information, but we do support advanced keywords, so you could search for something like
“extended cab” OR “crew cab”
using the keywords field, for instance.
Make it available worldwide - ebay and autotrader and craigslist is available in other countries too. I'm hoping for the UK edition.
We would definitely like to expand to other geos in the future, and the UK would probably be top of the list. Before that though, we have a number of improvements we want to make to the current site. (In particular, we’ve got some new filters to add, and our model matching isn’t as good as we’d like it to be yet.)
In the meantime, you could try using our other site, www.searchtempest.com. It will let you search craigslist and eBay worldwide. (Although it does use a google custom search rather than direct links to search craigslist outside North America, so it won’t always catch everything.)
Carsforsale.com is a strong website for classic car enthusiasts and could draw in more usage of autotempest if you put it in. Love your website guys' website! Thanks!
We’d love to work with carsforsale. Pleas consider reaching out to them to suggest it as well.!
There are too many vehicles listed as manual when they are in fact automatics. This is an extreme annoyance when searching for a manual as you must also go into the listing, instead of just through the search list, and look at pictures to confirm it is truly a manual. It would be a good idea to also request why the report of a bad listing is being made.5 votes
That’s a good idea. I especially like the idea of flagging wrong transmission type or other wrong info, either for us to review, or maybe to filter automatically somehow (without allowing for abuse). We’ve got a few other things on the go for now, but will definitely keep this in mind.
There are tons you could add to become THE place to start a search.1 vote
Would love to do this. If you’d like to see BAT results on AutoTempest, please reach out to them and let them know.
sort by amount of savings. compare listing price with the national average price and display percentage saved by purchasing a given car. this way people looking for the best deal and not necessarily a particular car, could quickly sort through adds.9 votes
This is not a bad idea! It could end up being more difficult than it’s worth, but we’ll look into it.
Add an option to out selected filters to a RSS link that RSS Readers can read and alert user a used car has been listed6 votes
Since we currently search multiple sources, we aren’t able to make one big RSS feeds containing all the results. You can get RSS feeds for the craigslist results only by clicking “Feeds for this search” in the top right of the SearchTempest window that’s opened when you click the craigslist source on AutoTempest. We are looking at various ways we can notify users when a new ad that matches their search is posted :)
Hope this helps!
It would be great to save interested cars in a workbook to compare and download.8 votes
